SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--The volume of Brazil's beef exports slipped 4.11% in July to 221,000 metric tons from 230,000 tons a year earlier as a continued partial ban on the country's beef by 55 countries after a foot-and-mouth outbreak last year took its toll, the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries, or Abiec, said Tuesday.
"Up until March or April, we were still exporting stocks of beef that we had before the outbreak in Mato Grosso do Sul occurred, which kept flows strong," an Abiec spokesman to Dow Jones Newswires. "But the stocks are now gone, which means that we're now exporting the beef we've produced after the outbreak, and that's why the volume is now diminishing."
Despite the ban, Brazilian beef export revenues for the month jumped 8.6% on year to $355 million, due to the rise in world beef prices, the association also said. In the first seven months of this year, beef exports by volume rose 2.3% on year to 1.29 million metric tons, while revenues climbed 15.5% to $2 billion.
Russia remained Brazil's top customer by revenue in this period, buying 171,000 tons of fresh beef and generating $251 million in revenues. Egypt was the country's No. 2 customer, importing 184,000 tons of fresh beef for revenues of $230 million. Other top buyers included Italy, the Netherlands, the U.K., Algeria and Bulgaria.
The U.S. was the top buyer of processed Brazilian beef products for this period, importing 97,000 tons for $165 million. Other top clients for processed beef included the U.K., Italy, Holland and Germany. Brazil is the world's leading beef exporter.
