Looks to capitalize on NZ's clean, disease-free status
New name for beef
Meat & Wool New Zealand has launched a new brand of beef in Korea called New Zealand Ja-yeon Ki-woon Sogogi, which translates as 'New Zealand Nature-bred Beef'.
Meat & Wool New Zealand Manager Market Development, Craig Finch says the name highlights New Zealand beef as a safe and natural alternative to the grain-fed beef supplied to the Korean market by Australia and the US.
The Korean market is currently closed to US imports because instances of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) have been detected there.
"Our point of difference in this market is that New Zealand beef is grass-fed and completely natural. Combined with our disease-free status, New Zealand beef is a natural fit with the Korean people who are very particular about their health and food safety." Mr Finch says.
In 2004/5, beef exports to Korea totaled $217 million, compared to sheepmeat exports of $4million and wool exports of $1million.
